This iconic winery started in 1998, when then Philosophy professor Abe Schoener took a sabbatical and traveled west to study wine. He spent years learning and interning – making friends and developing a revolutionary style of winemaking in America’s most classical winemaking region. His throughline has always been a love of learning – learning how to make wine by trying everything and seeing the results. He insists unconventionality is not the object, but rather the result of a process where nothing is taken for granted and everything starts with the fruit in its most basal form. After a brief interlude while Abe began his new project, Scholium is back, using fruit from the same sites, but now winemaking out of LA, where Abe also assists in the running of LA River Wine Co.
